February 2015 Tidings VOLUME 55 NUMBER 2
WE ARE JOYFULLY GATHERED TOGETHER BY GOD’S GRACIOUS LOVE IN JESUS CHRIST TO WORSHIP HIM, TO GROW IN FAITH AND TO PROCLAIM JESUS BY WORD AND SERVICE.
Throughout the year we will be celebrating 75 years in our community. On February 7, 1940 a group of people met and chose the name Trinity Lutheran Church. On Sunday, February 8th we will celebrate our birthday during and after service. Please join us.
Genesis 12:2 “I will make of you a great nation … so that you will be a blessing.”
I am a big Iowa State Basketball fan. I click on the computer from time to time and go to Cyclone Fanatic and get all the updates about what is happening. It is not a cult but a fan base. And some-times teams coin the logo of “Cyclone Nation.” It is a sort of acknowledgment that you are not alone in your interest and enthusiasm about this team. There is a collective “nation” or people out there who are also just as excited and interested as you.
I was thinking about what might be the difference between this gathering of like-minded enthusiasts and college team that form a “nation” and how God gathers us in the Abraham Promises of “many nations” of faith. Or more precisely, a “Trinity Nation for the nations” in Jesus here in Vancouver who are excited about what God is doing in our lives and just as motivated and active in knowing what God is doing and getting involved in that very thing. How is it the same or close, and how might it be different from being a fan and supporter of a sports team?
The similarity would be that a common bond of interest and theme of purpose unites your team in a dream that it is headed somewhere and you are shooting as high as possible together to achieve it. Everyone is as “one” in this goal. Everyone’s eyes are on that promise of a prize. You can only go as high as people are willing to work and strive to get there together. And the whole nation or team suffers in a loss or rejoices in a win together. The difference may be the body of Christ where we live (ala, Trinity Nation) is not made up of fans (although we are fans of our Lord Jesus) but chosen disciples who are players and encouragers of others who know the way to achieve any goal depends on keeping the focus on God’s blessing and God’s goal.
There are more similarities than we may realize to being the people of Promise, Trinity Nation, a team who has been doing what God leads us to do together to be a blessing to others. Trinity Nation (I am not suggesting a name change) has been around for a while now (75 years and counting). Perhaps God has in mind for us to generate a little excitement and fire in this year of celebration. To find ways to push out into new ways to see ourselves and be God’s people for others. The Christ who unites us together in our quest to serve the world with God’s very promises is the One who promises that the prize He has won for us is in safe keeping, and awaits us at the finish line (final buzzer or whatever). Yet the Promises of God are hidden in that “together” striving for others.
Let us be the ones for others. Go, Trinity! Go Team!
75th Anniversary Planning Begins to Take Shape by Jack Johnson
At a recent meeting of the Planning Committee, the first joint event involving the congregation and our community was moved to April 4—the day before Easter Sunday. Building on the traditional morning Easter Egg hunt, a variety of activities will occur during the remainder of the day. We look forward to celebrating with our community the 75 years of God’s Story unfolding through Trinity Lutheran Church here in Vancouver and—in fact—around the world. So keep that date open and look for the details in next month’s issue of The Tidings newsletter.
Helping Hands Needed by Donna Ellingwood
Mission Sowers is in need of additional help making quilts for Lutheran World Relief. You don’t need to know how to sew to help our mission. If you can use a scissors, tie a knot, or count you have the skills necessary. We invite you to join us Feb. 5 at 9:00 AM. Yes, we’re Lutherans so we have coffee too! Hope you can join us.
SAVE THE DATE!
Vacation Bible School and Day Camp
will be July 6-9 this year! We can’t wait!
First brainstorming meeting: Sunday, April 12th at 12:00, in Activities Room.
Help Wanted! – Children’s Clothing Swap Closet needs volunteers
If you’re free to sort clothes for even a half an hour on Sunday afternoon, or on Tuesday or Thursday mornings, we’d love to have you join the efforts of our TLC Children’s Clothing Swap Closet. Or, if you’re interested in helping people find what they need during hours it’s open to the public (2nd and 4th Sundays, from 12-2 p.m.), that would be fabulous too. Please talk to Kellie or Sue about this volunteer opportunity. We’d love to make this outreach public to Lincoln Elementary School this month, and we need more help to make that happen. We’ve received lots of wonderful clothing donations — and just now need to let the community know what we have to give. Thank you!
Our Donations Still Helping Needy Children in La Paz, Mexico
Trinity has been faithful since 1999 in helping children in the poorest of families in La Paz, Mexico. While efforts of the local community there are slowly improving over time, Trinity’s efforts continue to help meet critical needs of the children in two of the poorest colonias (neighborhoods), which are situated close to the local dump. Our efforts are twofold: 1) Help fund breakfast for students in one of the colonias; and 2) help students continue beyond the six years of basic schooling through annual scholarships. For more information, check out the latest newsletter of FANLAP, the local foundation established to promote and direct local efforts; it’s posted in the hallway leading to the church office.
