Pastors Gary and Ruth Larson joined the Trinity family Thanksgiving week, 2013, along with their well-traveled children Jonah, Hannah, Marta, and Gracia.
Pastors Gary and Ruth Larson met at the Lutheran Bible Institute (now Trinity Lutheran College) in Seattle, WA. After graduating from LBI, they attended Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN. Their first call was to Nebraska, where they served three congregations for five years. They returned to Washington, where they served a congregation in Colville, WA for five years.
Having always had the goal of overseas missionary work, they eventually accepted a call to Bangladesh, through World Mission Prayer League, a Lutheran Missionary organization. They served in Bangladesh for eight life-altering years, which they recall fondly. Pr. Ruth shares,
It was very hard to say goodbye. The Bengalis are amazing people. And our children gained so much from exposure to the other side of the world.
In addition to Bangladesh, during their time overseas, the Larsons travelled to China, Nepal, Egypt, Israel, India and Thailand. Pr. Gary says,
Once you’ve been exposed to different cultures, you realize that not everyone sees things the way you do. Now, our children love other cultures. And, you do not leave Bangladesh unaffected by the daily exposure to great need, deep poverty. I don’t think you could live there without learning compassion.
