Jesus said “Do you not say ‘Four months more and then the harvest?’ I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.”John 4:35 (NRSV)
What is it about Fall that feels like life is so rushed? We had such a hot and beautiful summer, and the summer days, though busy, always feel laid back. Then the temperature drops just a few degrees and it’s a race to keep up. Get the vegetables in. Collect the firewood. Clean the windows. Shampoo the car- pets. Shampoo the dog. Get the green stuff off the roof. So many other projects around the house raise their head too, projects that all summer I thought we could put off. We sense the urgency that there is no putting off these things any longer, ’cause winter’s coming!
The gospel is always coming our way too. And the church must sense the urgency of its witness in the world. We might like to think we will get to it one of these days, but Jesus pushes us to see the fields right now, ripe for harvest. And good farmers will quit their day job to get their crops in on time. We must sense the urgency of our witness to the world, today.
God loves this world. God loves each person in front of us. And God wants each person in this world to come to know Him as He has revealed Himself in Jesus. For many of us, this is so elementary–we have heard it all of our lives. But do we really GET IT that this simple truth changes lives? Coming to know God in Christ impacts the whole person for the rest of his/her life. Everyone needs Jesus, whether they know it right now or not. And we must keep serving up the gospel. We must even pick up the pace, as we are now truly in a mission field.
Let’s step it up together!
